Year of Scientific Awareness Activities.
To create scientific awareness among the student community, mobile Scientific Models were fabricated for conducting the temporary exhibition ‘Hands-On Experience in Science’ with two day duration, at all the 30 districts in Tamilnadu in the ‘YEAR OF SCIENTIFIC AWARENESS 2004’. The scientific models are deigned to create knowledge in the fields of General Physics, Mechanics, Optics, Aerodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Space Research.
Year of Physics Activities (2005)
Seminars and Workshops for the college students and lecture programmes and competitions, exclusive science fair on ‘Physics Around You’ for the school students were organised throughout the year 2005 which was designated as the World Year of Physics. Quiz Contests were conducted at various parts of the State.
Student Selection for the 58th International Astronautical Congress (IAC)
Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre is the only nodal Centre in Tamilnadu for screening and selecting the students at Higher Secondary Level and U.G. and P. G. (Engineering/Science/Law) levels from Tamilnadu to participate in the prestigious International Astronautical Congress, to be held at Hyderabad in September 2007, for which the registration fee and other expenditure will be sponsored by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Aforementioned are some of the many activities of Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre apart from these, Computer awareness Courses, planetarium programme development to convey the latest developments in this field, are regularly organised. National Conferences on Astronomy and Planetarium Science (in the years 2002 and 2006) were also conducted. Presently for the International year of Planet earth (2008) activities are being designed.
With the constant support from the Government of Tamilnadu and from various quarters, Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre is able to render good educational services, through non-formal permanent educational facilities and extension activities, in the State. Realising the important role and commitment in the Society, Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre extends all assistance and expertise by various means to the other departments, institutions and States also.
On that direction, Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre took-up the task of setting up of science parks and completed the projects at 14 places. This include 4 Schools and
10 Community parks at various districts like Thanjavur, Erode, Madurai, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Tenkasi, Tiruchirappalli, Chennai and even at Thiruvananthapuram. The Centre has also fabricated and supplied 30 number of indoor-exhibits on the subject physical science to the Science Centre, established by the Government of Rajasthan.
Based on the response evoked from the Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation, Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre has installed powerful Terrestrial Telescopes at the places of tourist importance viz. Uthagamandalam, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, Kanyakumari, Rock-fort – Tiruchirappalli and Kollihills – Namakkal.
The other educational facility, created by Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre, to inculcate scientific temper is the Mobile Science Exhibition unit. This “Science on Wheels “ tours various districts of Tamilnadu and neighbouring States like Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. Impressed by this facility, the Department of Science and Technology & Environment, Government of Puducherry approached Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre , in this connection.
The Museo Bus with 24 working models on the topics relevant to the Science subjects, being taught at the level of Primary and Middle School standards were fabricated and the same was handed over to Puducherry Government for their use.
