Try Science Kiosk


The Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre approached the IBM India Limited, Bangalore for providing Try Science Kiosk facility, worth Rs.12.00 lakhs each, as donation at the Periyar Science and Technology Centre. The Tryscience Kiosk is a stall with IBM Computer installed with necessary software, keyboard, trackball and two plasma monitors arranged aesthetically appealing and easy to operate way. It has the provision for internet connection and connected with other Science Centres at different parts of the world. The kiosk can provide worldwide interactive science experience for the general public and in particular for the school children. Webcams and internet connectivity are arranged at the other museums of the world, in such a way that students at Chennai can see the science exhibits of their centres at different angles, interactively.

Using the interactive missions in the user friendly kiosk, many science and technology concepts can be learnt. The state-of-the art kiosk with audio-visual backup, is a boon for the students to learn science and technology in a fun and innovative way. The Tryscience kiosk has interactive science based missions that give each visitor a chance to explore, discover and learn scientific concepts according to their requirements. The missions include, ‘The Dig: Unearth and Identify a Dinosaur Fossil’, ‘Command a Shuttle Mission to the International Space Station; ‘Dolphins’, etc.

Tryscience is a collaboration of IBM, the New York Hall of Science and more than 450 member institutions of the association of Science and Technology Centres. IBM India Limited will provide maintenance and support of the kiosk exhibit for a period of three years from the date of installation.

The kiosk was installed and inaugurated on 25.02.2004. Thiru.R. Dhamodaran, Business Unit Executive, Software Group and Developer Relations, IBM India Limited delivered the Special Address. Following the inaugural function, a live demo of the kiosk with connectivity to the Science Museums of other countries was conducted. A science quiz for the students was also organized during the programme.

Looking at the keen interest against by the visiting children and success of the installation of the Try Science Kiosk, IBM India Ltd has installed two more Kiosks at the Centre. Further, based on the request by this Centre, IBM India Pvt. Ltd. Has provided another Triscience Kiosk at Anna Science Centre, Tiruchirappalli.
